Summer Learning Options

 

For ALL students, pre-K through grade 12
Virtual Learning Booster--Self-Directed (Click on link for access)

What:  Suggested activities that students can use to boost their understanding of content and skills in a self-directed platform utilizing high quality materials selected from the web based on their alignment to our learning targets, the quality of their development, and their compliance with the CT Student Data Privacy Act.  These activities would be optional learning activities for students that tie back to the targeted content and skills from the emergency remote-learning period.  These activities will be made available in addition to the summer learning activities that have been provided in the past (summer math, summer reading).  These activities would not be collected by teachers.

How:  Curriculum supervisors will select learning activities that tie directly to our curriculum, engage students in new ways of accessing that content, and meet the standards of the CT Student Data Privacy Act.  They will share these recommended activities through links outlined by content area and grade level from our BPS webpage.

When:  The menu of activities will be made available to students beginning on July 6  through to the end of the summer. Students would complete these activities as they choose.  


For students in grades K-5
Teacher-Led Virtual Learning Booster (Click on link for access)

What:  Two teachers from each grade, grade K-5, will target two to three major literacy and math concepts for the year and will provide a blended approach of instruction including virtual synchronous instruction (video-audio) in addition to SeeSaw/Google Classroom learning opportunities.  

Serves:  Teacher Led Virtual Learning Boosters will be made available to 40 students per grade-level, 240 total students.  Teachers and administrators from our elementary schools will identify students based on their academic performance both in virtual and in-person school environments using criteria that has been developed by Teaching and Learning Supervisors.  Students would be recommended to participate.  Participation would be optional.  

How:  Teaching and Learning Supervisors will work with the teachers to identify the key essential concepts.  Teachers will then plan both “live” instruction and virtual instruction around those key concepts.  Teachers will meet with students on a daily basis for four days a week.  Students would also have classroom activities that they would need to complete.  Programs utilized would be:  SeeSaw, Google Classroom, Lexia, and ST Math.  



For students in grades 6-8
Teacher-Led Virtual Learning Booster

What:  One teacher from each grade, grades 6-8 for English Language Arts and Math, will provide a blended approach of instruction including virtual synchronous instruction (video-audio) in addition to asynchronous learning opportunities.  

Serves:  Teacher Led Virtual Learning Boosters will be made available to 25 students per grade-level, 150 total students.  Teachers and administrators from our middle schools will identify students based on their academic performance both in virtual and in-person school environments using criteria that has been developed by Teaching and Learning Supervisors.  Students would be recommended to participate.  Participation would be optional.  

How:  Teaching and Learning Supervisors will work with the teachers to identify the key essential concepts.  Teachers will then plan both “live” instruction and virtual instruction around those key concepts.  Teachers will meet with students on a daily basis for four days a week.  Students would also have classroom activities that they would need to complete.  Programs utilized could be:  Google Classroom, Khan Academy, Common Lit, Newsela.


For students in Grades 9-12
Credit-Recovery for High School

What:  For the purposes of credit recovery for students who ended the year with an “I” and therefore do not receive credit, students will engage in blended learning in a course delivered through Edgenuity with an hour of live instruction from a teacher. Students would be expected to spend approximately 8 hours per week (2 hours on Mondays-Thursdays) in coursework.

Serves: Students who have ended the year with no credit in the following courses:  English 1-4, Algebra, Geometry, Algebra 2, Civics, US History, World History, Physical Science, Biology and Chemistry.

How:  Each teacher will be assigned up to 25 students in the classroom.  Teachers will use our BPS curriculum to identify the learning within the Edgenuity platform that best align with the essential learning targets for our curriculum.  Teachers would blend live instruction, personal connection with students, and Edgenuity tasks.

When:  The program would run for five weeks, following the typical summer school schedule.  Teachers will develop his/her own schedule to ensure that each student has connected with the teacher for at least one hour per week.  


For students with individualized educational plans
Extended School Year for students with Disabilities

What:  Decisions regarding a child’s eligibility for ESY services are to be made by Planning and Placement Teams (PPTs) on an individual basis based on the needs of the child. ESY services cannot be limited to children in particular disability categories. The type of service, amount of service and duration of the ESY program for eligible children is determined by the needs of each individual child who is eligible for ESY services. 

Serves: Students grades preK-12+ as determined by Planning and Placement Teams

How:  Students will be provided with remote learning aligned to their Individualized Educational Programs to the greatest extent possible. Special education teachers will plan both “live” virtual and remote instruction. Related service providers will plan for both “live” virtual and remote services.

When:  The program is scheduled to run for June 29-July 23, 2020, 9am-11:30 a.m., Mondays-Thursdays
