What's Happening

Below is a list of JUST A FEW of this year's gifted happenings across our district!

  • Creative Writing Workshops -Quinnipiac University creative writing professor Ken Cormier returned to conduct inspiring workshops with students from across the district at all grade levels. While last year's  sessions were modified to utilize the Zoom format, this year's live workshops allowed heightened student engagement with instruction that included music, poetry, and figurative language.
  • Invention Convention-Southside and Edgewood schools participated in Invention Convention, sending several students to the state finals and two students to the national finals at the Henry Ford Museum, in Dearborn, MI. Ms. Ferony and Mrs. DiFusco were extremely proud of all of their young inventors!
  • Art and Writing Initiative- Bristol Central gifted coach Gale Dickau merged various disciplines, as she combined An Evening with Yo-Yo Ma at the Bushnell, Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel Exhibition at the CT Convention Center as well as a trip to the Wadsworth Athenium to inspire personal, real world, thought provoking writing with her diverse group of students. 
  • Seeing the World-John Stavens and his BEHS students completed the Model UN program with a trip to NY that was life changing for his students. Additional trips to Ellis Island, Bronx Zoo and the Newport Mansions provided an assortment of lifelong memories for all involved. 
  • Cool Coding - Ivy Drive gifted coach Mike Tartarelli conducted weekly programming centering on Sphero robotic programming, integrating in person students as well as students joining remotely from home!
  • Chess, Math and the Ocean -At NEMS, Maggie DeVito and Steve Vastola put together a Mathcounts Team, as well as a chess club and a year end trip to Groton for Project Oceanology!
  • Odyssey Champions -Greene Hills gifted coaches Terry and Melissa Grant organized elementary and middle school Odyssey of the Mind teams that became state champions this year. The middle school team went on to compete at the World Finals in Iowa, creating a lifetime of memories for Coach Grant and his talented scholars!
  • The World Around You -Chippens Hill Middle School students participated in the Mathcounts program, completed lessons in civics, finance and STEM with coach Joseph Grabowski, culminating in a CT Science Center Trip to learn about mummies!
  • Crazy 8s- Stafford School coach Rose Diehl put her students through the paces with her fun, engaging, Crazy 8s math curriculum which she won through a write in grant process. 
  • STEM Studio -Gina Martineau's MTV scholars enjoyed after school STEM, creative writing, and ozobot coding challenges throughout the year, and culminated with in school enrichment programming from the CT Science Center!
  • Checkmate! - Hubbell School gifted coach Christine Fanelli developed young chess masters and also treated students to an author's workshop with P.W. Catanese!
  • MORE STEM - West Bristol gifted coach Dayna Vitale implemented creative, hands on after school STEM activities for her students and combined with the middle school students and coach Sirianni to view the mummy exhibit and a physics workshop at the CT Science Center!
