Press Release January 11, 2012

Bristol Board of Education to Begin the Process of Developing a System-wide School Redistricting Plan

The Bristol Board of Education and the central office staff have begun working with the consultant firm, Milone and MacBroom on the complex task of redistricting the city’s public schools. With three school closings and potentially a fourth driven by financial concerns coupled with opening two new K-8 schools in the fall, a major redistricting effort is necessary to redistribute students while simultaneously meeting State and local educational policies and objectives.

At their January 4, 2012 meeting the Board of Education approved the development of a timeline (see below) for completing the task of redistricting, including dates and times for all meetings and public question and comment sessions.

The consultants are preparing an existing conditions report that will be presented at a Special Workshop Meeting of the Board of Education scheduled for February 8, 2012. The existing conditions report analyzes district-wide historic enrollment patterns and trends, changes in demographics, residential development patterns, birth data, enrollment projections and individual school capacities. This comprehensive overview is expected to assist the Board, its staff and the public to understand the numerous factors affecting the redistricting plan.

The consultants will also review the criteria under which redistricting plans will be developed. These criteria will be the primary guide for developing new school district boundaries, as the consultants and Board move forward. Some early preliminary mapping configurations will also be shared with the Board.
