A PBS Kids site. Children can write/illustrate stories. Initial instruction will be necessary for younger students.Most suitable for grades 1 and 2. Audio.


Word Family
Sort

Students choose a vowel and sort words into columns of words with the same vowel sounds. Most suitable for grades 1 and 2. No audio.


Building Language

Students choose one of three options: sorting items by category, practicing letter recognition, or identifying rhyming words. Most suitable for Pre-K to K. Audio.


Word Builder

A word-building game fromRead-Write-Think. Students select word endings and beginnings. Most suitable for K-1. No audio.


Dance Mat Typing

An introduction to typing skills. Most suitable for grades 1 and up. Audio.


Letter Matching

An ABCya game. Students match lowercase and uppercase letters. Audio. Smart-board friendly.Most suitable for grades K-1.


Storybird

Free registration required. Students select from a large library of illustrations and write a story to accompany the illustrations. Many possible applications. No audio. Suitable for PreK (with dictation) and up.

PBS Kids Stories

PBS Kids: (Read Between the Lions.) Students can select a video and listen to short stories from a variety of categories. Students can read along with the highlighted text. Audio. Most suitable for Pre-K to grade 1.

Keyboard Zoo

An ABCya game. Good for practicing finding letters on the keyboard and practicing letter sounds. Most suitable for grades K-1. Audio.

Students can browse the site to hear about variety of subjects. Navigation is driven by pictures and information pops up in the form of short videos/games. Most suitable for Pre-K-1. Audio.

A wide variety of educational games for grades Pre-K to 5. This site has some ads. Audio.

A wide variety of educational games available for grades Pre-K to 5. Lots of choices, but the site can be overwhelming to navigate. Scroll down on the home page to read the recommended sections per grade level. This site has some ads. Audio.

Story Starters

Set young writers loose with prompts that explore the themes of Adventure, Fantasy, or Sci-Fi. Or choose Scrambler, for random word combinations. Story Starters gives ideas for character, plot, and setting. If you want to change your writing prompt, pull the lever and it will serve up a new prompt, either piece-by-piece or all at once (description from Scholastic). Best for grades 1 and up. No audio instructions. Completed stories can be printed or downloaded.

Storyline

The Screen Actors Guild Foundation records well-known actors reading children’s books and makes graphically dynamic videos so that children around the world can be read to with just the click of a Storyline Online video book image (description from Storyline).
