BCHS Driver Ed. Description

Classroom
A state-mandated, 2-hour training class for each student and a parent is held at the start of each session. This first class is scheduled for the evening.

The remaining 14 classes are held after the normal school day. Students must be age 16 when they start the classroom. There are no excused classroom absences; any missed time must be made up.

Students do not need a Connecticut Learner's Permit to begin classroom instruction.

Behind-the-Wheel
Each student receives 8 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. Road lessons introduce students to a variety of roadway environments, and special emphasis is given to maneuvers and procedures generally encountered during the Connecticut Driver’s Test.

Students must have a Connecticut Learner’s Permit before beginning road lessons. Road Lessons are scheduled by the instructor, in consultation with the student. Our goal is to have everyone complete the driving portion (8 hours behind-the-wheel) of the program within four months from the beginning of classroom instruction. Actual completion times depend on factors such as student availability and weather.

School Board Policy requires two students in the vehicle at all times. Students will work in pairs, and all road lessons will begin and end at a Bristol Public School Driver Education site (Bristol Adult Education Center, BCHS, or BEHS). Students are required to carry their Connecticut Driver Learner’s Permit during road lessons.

BAEC Driver Education

Summer Class
Bristol Adult Education Center offers a complete driver education session, including 30 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours behind-the-wheel.

Encore Lessons
These two-hour road lessons offer additional guided practice to the novice student driver, or any Bristol resident, 18 or over, who needs a refresher in driver skills.
Fee: $100

8 Hour Safe Driving Course (Adult)
This course meets the Connecticut DMV requirements for adults, 18 and older, who wish to apply for a Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license and who do not hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by any other state, or by any territory or possession of the United States.
Fee: $80

Driver Encore Lessons

These two-hour road lessons offer additional guided practice to the novice student driver, or any Bristol resident, 18 or over, who needs a refresher in driver skills.

High School Age Students
This two-hour road lesson offers the novice student driver additional guided practice of basic and critical skills required for safe driving and successfully passing the driving test. Lesson highlights include speed control, proper stopping, entering and exiting a variety of roadways, correct lane selection, yielding properly, turnabouts, and a variety of parking maneuvers. Prior to registering you must have a Learner's Permit for 16-17 Year Olds. Pick up & Drop off locations are: BEHS, BCHS or Bristol Adult Education Center.

Residents Over Age 18
Any Bristol resident, 18 or over, who needs a refresher in skills required for the driving test, is also eligible to purchase this service. Prior to registering, you must have the Adult Learner's Permit.

8 Hour Safe Driving Course

This course meets the Connecticut DMV requirements for adults, 18 and older, who wish to apply for a Connecticut motor vehicle operator’s license and who do not hold a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued by any other state, or by any territory or possession of the United States.

The course consists of eight hours of instruction and complies with the following requirements:

  1. Four hours concerning the nature and effects of alcohol and drugs, as provided in subparagraph (B) of subdivision (1) of subsection (d) of section 14-36 of the Connecticut General Statues; and (2) Four (4) hours of subjects directed to safe driving practices.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Adult (age 18+) 8-Hour Safe Driving Practices Program, a student must:

  • Provide proof of being at least 18 years of age.
  • Be a resident of the city of Bristol or city taxpayer.
  • Fully pay tuition fee.

Classroom Policies & Provisions

Student Attendance

Students must complete all 8 hours of the 8-Hour Safe Driving Practices Program to receive a certificate.

Certificate

Students successfully completing all requirements for the 8-Hour Safe Driving Practices Program, will receive the appropriate Connecticut State Certificate needed to take the driver’s test.

SPECIAL NEEDS

Students requiring classroom adaptations or special consideration are encouraged to speak with the driver education instructor or program director.

Students whose main language is not English may also be accommodated, following evaluation and consultation with the program director.
